A basement is the easiest room in the house to coat and the easiest one to get wrong, and in Chatham-Kent it is moisture that decides which of the two you end up with.
The slab sits in heavy clay on flat, drained land, and clay holds water against concrete instead of letting it move away. The concrete wicks that water upward, and if it arrives underneath a sealed coating it lifts it. So every basement slab gets a reading before we quote it. That number tells us which primer the floor needs, or whether it wants a moisture barrier build, or occasionally that there is a drainage problem to solve before any coating goes near it. Slightly damp is usually workable. We just have to know about it first.
A basement floor is walked on rather than driven on, so the wear layer can be lighter than a garage build. It is usually living space too, which means colour and finish carry more weight than they do in a bay. Light matters most of all: basements are dim by nature, and a pale floor throws whatever light there is back up, which is the cheapest way there is to brighten a lower level. Sealing the slab also stops the concrete dust, and that is the change people tend to notice first.
Finished lower levels and family rooms, and home gyms most of all, since a resin floor takes rubber matting, dropped weights and sweat and cleans off properly afterwards. Beyond that it goes into laundry and utility rooms where a sealed floor around a washer is worth having, workshops, storage areas, and plenty of unfinished basements where the whole aim is simply a clean, bright, sealed slab.
We coat right around mechanical equipment rather than stopping short in a neat rectangle, because the gap you leave is where the dust comes back. Floor drains get the coating carried into the surround and coved so there is no joint sitting at floor level, and where there is a sump we work around it and seal the edge properly.
